Korrio and Axon Sports released today the results of the inaugural Youth Soccer Coaches Concussion Awareness Survey, aimed at gaining valuable insights into youth soccer coaches awareness of concussions and concussion management tools. The survey, which polled more than 250 youth soccer coaches from around the country, revealed 75 percent of youth soccer coaches are ?very? or ?extremely? aware of sports-related concussions in youth sports, and more than 80 percent of respondents indicated their organizations have an established set of guidelines pertaining to player concussions. The survey also showed that coaches have a gap in concussion management knowledge, with only half of the respondents indicating familiarity with baseline testing, widely considered a best-practice protocol for concussion management.

Korrio and Axon Sports will be unveiling the full results of Youth Soccer Coaches Concussion Awareness Survey later this week at the US Youth Soccer Workshop (booth #214), which takes place February 16-18, 2012, at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, MA.

While the survey results among the coaches for concussion awareness and guideline settings are encouraging, more education is needed regarding both overall awareness and, more significantly, baseline testing for youth athletes.

?We were certainly encouraged by the high-level of concussion awareness, but with 25 percent ? that?s one in four ? coaches still professing a lack of awareness regarding serious brain injuries to young athletes, we believe there is still a lot of work to do,? said Steve Goldman, CEO of Korrio. ?That is particularly true with regards to baseline testing, which is a standard measure to assist medical practitioners in caring for injured players and making return-to-play decisions following a concussion. With the growing availability and affordability of baseline testing for youth athletes, there is no reason why any coach should not be aware of its benefits. Every player should have a baseline test for concussion management.?

The Korrio and Axon Sports Youth Soccer Coaches Concussion Awareness Survey, conducted Nov. 1 through Dec. 31, 2011, polled a mix of United States-based youth soccer coaches at all levels of the sport. The survey was designed to gauge youth soccer coaches? level of concussion awareness and the strength of related organizational guidelines, protocols, education and training.

Knowledge Gap in Concussion Management Tools ? Including Baseline Testing ? a Concern

Survey results showed 49 percent of the responding coaches were not familiar with baseline testing for concussion management and only 20 percent have personally recommended baseline testing to players or parents. More than 84 percent of the coaches responded that their league, club or team does not currently recommend baseline testing for their players.

Baseline concussion testing is one of the most tangible concussion management tools available and is an industry standard, at the professional and collegiate level. Players take a baseline test prior to the start of the season to measure cognitive brain functions including attention, processing speed, and working memory for comparison to future results in the event of a head injury.

Traditionally a protocol that required doctor visits, baseline testing today can be administered through online tools, reducing the cost and increasing access for families.

?Baseline testing is a very simple and effective method for measuring cognitive brain functions and managing the return of players suffering from concussion symptoms,? said Axon Sports President and CEO Polly James. ?It is a protocol that should be familiar to every coach and volunteer in youth sports, as well something parents and players should be very familiar with. These survey results indicate there is still education to do on a fundamental step to advance safety.?

Survey Reveals Lack of Education for Parents

The survey also reveals a gap in concussion awareness and education when it comes to the parents of youth soccer players. Of the coaches surveyed, only 56 percent reported their organizations offer some kind of concussion awareness education for parents.

Parents are crucial in the concussion diagnostic and recovery process, since they have more day-to-day exposure to their children than coaches. Educating parents regarding the signs of a possible concussion, as well as the stages of recovery, where they can help prevent the recurring damage that can occur when a child returns to sports too early after suffering a concussion is critical.

?While this survey focused on coaches, it is clear that parents play a key role in concussion management, and should be included in every step of the process,? said Korrio?s Goldman.

Bayer made a unique request that changed the course of White?s fledgling company. ?They told us that they wanted to be at the top of the page when people searched for pharmaceutical products on Alta Vista,? White says. ?That?s basically what we did ? made the site better, improved its design and took what they and other companies had already achieved and optimized it for search engines. So we were in essence doing optimization before we even inadvertently coined the name for the industry. Our next big client wanted the same services so we never really focused exclusively on web design, even if that was our original intent.

?Back in those days,? he adds, ?many upstart companies had the idea that they could produce a great business plan and get millions from financial institutions. But our business plan was based on raising clients instead of money and getting our money through those relationships. I like to joke that while some may think SEO is a complex scientific process, it actually boils down to the concept of a picture painting a thousand words. If you took a thousand words to describe that picture, you would be feeding the search engine the data it wants. A company like Bayer not only needs to show pictures to describe medical conditions it can treat, but must find key words that are appropriate for the website that can help consumers find the site before any of their competitors.?

White is the only professional to have chaired the Search Council of the IAB (Internet Advertising Bureau) Europe ever; in that capacity, he defined Advanced Search Engine Marketing and determined Benchmarked Search Engine Marketing as an advanced search engine marketing strategy that is still true today. While he continues to work on client accounts and is still a member of IAB, he is also involved today in understanding more about the influencing dynamics of how and why consumers buy online. His hands on, real world expertise has given rise to his new title of ?Digital Systems Developer.? He has recently developed smartphone apps as mobile optimization becomes a necessity now that people are buying, selling and acquiring information with their phones more than ever before. Traffic from social media sites like Facebook currently outstrips the user volumes of Google.

?The headlines we shoot for these days are what we now refer to as social media, the big four?LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube and Facebook,? he says. ?All of this has translated to big changes in our business because at the end of the day Facebook is still a microprocessor driven app. Early on, we recommended that clients create content for their sites that added more words to be found by search engines. We also recommended that they get those who surf the web to leave feedback and contact information. In effect, that?s the kind of thing we see in social media now, where people forward and share information and services.

?The sophistication we learned and experienced and informative words we used through search engine marketing are now collectively called social media,? White adds. ?That?s been a recurring theme, proving that we were correct in the beginning to recommend to clients that they should not only have services on their sites, but the facility to help build a community so people would return. We have found that our clients will achieve their objectives by focusing on giving people what they want. The more they do that, the more likely they will be found on search engines.?

For White and Weboptimiser, the bottom line has always been the same?all the client wants is more sales, and to get that, they must recognize that they need to generate appropriate traffic and have a website that converts visits into potential transactions. Social media and search engines are all about generating this traffic, which will lead to an ongoing relationship with consumers if the site has enough of what White calls ?multiple touching? that gives them more and more information in different ways. There is actually a lot of psychology involved in creating this relationship related to the art of persuasion and personality profiling. White has basically narrowed down potential consumers to four categories based on a quadrant chart: open and logical, closed and logical, open and creative and closed and creative. ?My job is always to evangelize good web practices,? he says.

Beyond his work related to Weboptimiser, White is 50% owner of a Miami based company called HowToManageASmallLawFirm.com, doubling business in only a year via his processes and sales techniques. Always open to new business ventures, the ever entrepreneurial, well traveled White (whose three month visa access to the U.S. has been permanently renewed for the last six years) met the company?s founder in Miami on an unexpected layover from Costa Rica to the UK. Most people throughout Europe were infuriated by air travel delays caused by the mountain in Iceland that erupted last February, but he found a way to turn his own situation into a profitable business venture.

?I had attended a conference in Costa Rica and had to stay in Miami for a few days,? he says. ?While I was there I sent an update email to the few thousand people on my company?s list about being ?Marooned in Miami? (South Florida). I got an email from a businessman on my list who was also in Miami who invited me to lunch. The guy was internet savvy and asked about how to get a website going. The upshot of a very detailed conversation was that I left as a 50 percent partner in his business. I let him keep his existing business separate and we would have a dual venture moving forward in which I would introduce him to my company?s processes and sales techniques.

?When I returned to Miami just months later, I learned that by implementing ideas the Weboptimiser way, the business had already doubled. I think I practice just about every single business model known but am always open to learning new ways of doing things. The businesses I am involved in are all returning healthy profits, particularly in these current times. So all is good.?
